review The ultraportable laptop market seems to be going gangbusters at the moment. Between the lovely MacBook Air, luxury thin-and-lights like the Sony VAIO Z and Samsung Series 9, and the recently launched ultrabooks, most of the action in mobile computing – at least so far as notebooks go – seems to be seems to be happening in the 1-1.5kg weight class.

The Series 9 originally launched in April in a 13.3” Intel Core i5 version, and Samsung followed it up a couple of months ago with variants of the 13.3” model with Core i3 and Core i7 processors, as well as a smaller 11.6” version with a Core i3 processor, the latter of which we’ve gotten in for review.

Like every other ultraportable, the Series 9 has a strong competitor in the MacBook Air, and even more so in the 11.6” space, given Apple is one of the few manufacturers with a notebook in this screen size. Samsung has had a lot of luck challenging Apple in the smartphone and tablet spaces, but can it pull the same thing off for ultraportable laptops?

HP (along with Dell) will be one of the last major PC makers to enter the market for these sub-0.8-inch, 3-pounds-and-under laptops that compete with Apple's MacBook Air.

"HP had yet to announce its intentions for the Ultrabook market and has been notably quiet as Lenovo, Asus, Acer, and Toshiba have all announced new ultra-thin models," Deron Kershaw, an analyst at GAP Intelligence, said in a research note today.

The world's largest PC maker needs to put all of its weight behind new product launches. The "hangover," as CEO Meg Whitman put it, of the August 18 announcement--when HP stated that it was exploring a spin-off of its PC business--has caused plenty of confusion among customers. "We're very conscious of the pressure that we face in the short term," said Bradley today.

Announced back in February 2011, the Dell Latitude XT3 convertible tablet finally has itself a product page on the company's U.S. and Canadian websites. The Latitude XT3 features a rotating 13.3-inch, 1366x768 pixel multitouch display, Core i3, i5 or i7 processor, a durable tri-metal design and a spill-resistant keyboard.

The Latitude XT3 is a successor of XT2 12.1-inch convertible (also available as a rugged XT2 XFR) and was initially planned for a July 2011 release. Apart from touchscreen and keyboard (optionally backlit), the new arrival in Latitude's family features a trackpad, while its bi-directional hinge allows to rotate the screen left to right, or right to left.

The housing is finished with magnesium alloy and according to the product page, the design meets defense-grade MIL-STD-810G standard.

The Dell Latitude XT3 is powered by an Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 CPU and an integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU. It comes with a DVD drive (available via XT3 Media Base or E-Modular Bay II), HD webcam, Gigabit Ethernet port, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, optional mobile broadband support (including WiMAX) and optional Bluetooth 3.0. Other connectivity features include 3x USB 2.0 (1x USB/eSATA combo), IEEE 1394, VGA and HDMI. Dell Latitude XT3 also comes with a memory card reader, 34 mm ExpressCard slot, SmartCard Reader, while a fingerprint reader is optional. Battery options include 6- and 9-cell batteries.

The tablet's dimensions are 12.7 x 1.2 x 8.7 in (323 x 30.9 x 221.7 mm) and it weighs 4.46lbs (2.02 kg) with a 6-cell battery.

The picture is still incomplete though - Dell Latitude XT3 pricing and availability details are yet to be announced.

HP reveals a handful of new laptops

As sure as the sun rises in the East, every few months you're going to see some new laptops from leading PC maker HP. That time is here again, and the latest additions include new versions of the high-end Envy, the Netbook-size Mini, and even a few professional-level ProBooks and Elitebooks. Here are some of the highlights:

HP Envy 14
The Envy 14, part of HP's premium Envy line, gets a refresh with Intel's 2011 Sandy Bridge CPUs, which offer better performance and battery life than the 2010 models. While it looks the same as previous Envy models, HP promises that the large clickpad is more responsive (multitouch gestures were a little wonky on the current versions), and USB 3.0 gets thrown in as well.

We've generally been big fans of this line, as it's one of the few high-design, gamer-friendly series of laptops from a major brand. You won't be able to get one of these new 14-inch models until June, and they start at $999.

HP Mini 210
It turns out Netbooks aren't totally dead after all (just mostly dead). The new Mini 210 is pretty much the same as last year's, with a dual-core Intel Atom CPU, and this is one of only a handful of new Netbooks we've heard about so far for 2011 (by this time last year, we were flooded with 2010 models).

But the new Mini 210 does add some new lid colors (including sweet purple, charcoal, crimson red, luminous rose, and ocean drive). Despite still being only about 1 inch thick, it works in a streamlined six-cell battery, and, surprisingly, the Mini 210 includes a Netbook version of the same Beats Audio technology found in the high-end Envy laptops, which is something of a bold move.

Also available in June, these will run $300-$330, which is still the standard for basic Netbooks.

HP Pavilion dv4
Other than a few vibrant new colors, the most notable thing about the Pavilion dv4 is the new version of HP's Cool Sense technology it includes. This is basically a user control panel for the cooling fans, but now it actually includes some recommended user settings, instead of leaving it all for you to figure out.

The Pavilion dv4 is coming May 18, starting at $599.

Corporate and business users shouldn't feel left out; there are a handful of new ProBook and EliteBook models as well. The $799 ProBook 5330m is a slim 13-inch with Intel's newest Sandy Bridge CPUs and a backlit keyboard, as well as TPM and Intel vPro technology (which are important for corporate IT departments).

Computer speakers, or multimedia speakers, are speakers external to a computer, that disable the lower fidelity built-in speaker. They often have a low-power internal amplifier. The standard audio connection is a 3.5 mm (approximately 1/8 inch) stereo jack plug often colour-coded lime green (following the PC 99 standard) for computer sound cards. A plug and socket for a two-wire (signal and ground) coaxial cable that is widely used to connect analog audio and video components. Also called a "phono connector," rows of RCA sockets are found on the backs of stereo amplifier and numerous A/V products. The prong is 1/8" thick by 5/16" long. A few use an RCA connector for input. There are also USB speakers which are powered from the 5 volts at 500 milliamps provided by the USB port, allowing about 2.5 watts of output power.

Computer speakers range widely in quality and in price. The computer speakers typically packaged with computer systems are small, plastic, and have mediocre sound quality. Some computer speakers have equalization features such as bass and treble controls.

The internal amplifiers require an external power source, usually an AC adapter. More sophisticated computer speakers can have a 'subwoofer' unit, to enhance bass output, and these units usually include the power amplifiers both for the bass speaker, and the small 'satellite' speakers.

HP released a whole number of new laptops last week, updating virtually their entire line with better hardware and more attractive looks.

We heard these were coming about two weeks ago, from the Envy 14/17 (pictured) to the Pavilions to the Minis, and HP has gone and updated its G-series notebooks too just for kicks. While you’ll have to wait until mid-June for the Envy 14 and the Minis, the rest of the gang has landed today.

HP has recently done a lot of work in updating their consumer products, including Pavilion notebooks, G-Series notebooks and Envy notebooks. Many of them have a redesigned brushed metal chassis as well as updated internals. Sony Ericsson aims higher in 2011

The first step that they've taken is to improve the Xperia Arc handset adding an impressive new camera as well as 32-point multitouch. Using a new type of sensor known as Exmor R and with improved placement of the light sensors on the device the Experia Arc will now be able to take pictures in low-light conditions with much improved image stability. As well as the reduced risk of blurred pictures the UI of the camera has also been tweaked to speed up the process of taking pictures.

Going from no multitouch on the previous arc to 32-point multi-touch on the new model will also see a significant improvement in performance. It would theoretically allow 32 digits to operate it simultaneously but its main purpose will be to provide more accurate gestures which should make for more accurate typing.

Although the X10 and X10 mini failed to impress the market Steve Walker from Sony Ericsson was keen to point out how they influenced the development of the new Arc;

"If we hadn't done what we did with the X10 and the X10 minis we wouldn't have been able to do what we've done here today"

The new arc is expected to be available within the next couple of months and "is just the first of many" that Sony Ericsson plans to release in the new year.

We’ve noted the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc on a couple of occasions recently and included it in our 5 of the best upcoming Android phones from CES 2011 and also wrote about some earlier teasers of the Xperia Arc.

Now Andrew Munchbach over on BGR, sourced from Android Central, has given us a closer look at the high-level camera performance of the slimline Xperia Arc and there’s also a video from Sony Ericsson that you can see below this story. The 8-megapixel camera includes a Sony sensor and f/2.4 aperture value, which makes it suitable for varying light conditions.

There is also an array of configurations available and the 720p video showing off the Xperia Arc camera improvements was also conveniently taken using another Arc. HP dv7 Laptop with Intel’s Sandy Bridge Inside

Intel may be waiting patiently to do the official unveiling of their Sandy Bridge processors until CES 2011, but that’s not stopping the name from popping up pretty much everywhere. We first caught glimpse of the new chip in an HP dv6 that was being shown off in an electronics store in Singapore, where you could buy one if you really wanted to. Another HP laptop appeared in Micro Center’s catalogue, and one lucky individual decided that they didn’t want to wait. So, they bought it. And sure enough, Sandy Bridge is on board. Thankfully, photos were taken.

On the inside of the machine, you’ll find a second-generation Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor, clocked at 2GHz. With the Tubo Boost technology thrown in for good measure, it can be bumped up to 2.9GHz. You’ll also find 6GB of RAM inside, along with 1TB 5400RPM HDD. 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6570 GPU should help with the graphics. The display is a 1600 x 900 LED variation, measuring in at 17.3-inches. For a bit of icing on the cake, the buyer also managed to run a few benchmarking tests, of which the laptop managed to come in just under the standard quad-core desktop PCs running Intel’s Core i7.

As for the battery life, the lucky individual states that it’s a 9-cell version, and that he’s managed to get just under four hours of usage while running Hulu, and only Hulu. When he did normal web browsing, along with listening to some music, he managed to eek out four and a half hours. It’s not all good news, though. Micro Center has pulled the listing for the HP dv7, and it’s no longer for sale. However, that should change here pretty quickly.

The data on the drive was easily retrieved and had handily-labelled folders. One marked ‘Nato Secret’ held information and photographs of police command posts in Helmand and notes about the police manning the area. These included the number of men, their weapons and patrol details.

The files also held pictures and personal information about “hundreds” of volunteers who had joined the Afghan police force and army. There was also a copy of the “Afghan National Police Tactical Handbook” which showed how the police would tackle the Taliban rebels and gave details on how to recognise a roadside bomb.

All of the data was unencrypted and freely accessible. Had it fallen into the hands of the Taliban, the information could have put Afghan lives in greater danger and compromised the British presence in the country.

Sugden, a graduate of Sandhurst, served with the Coldstream Guards as an anti-tank platoon commander in Afghanistan and has since just completed a year as the Queen’s equerry, or personal assistant.

This laptop story is the latest in a string of bad news about Ministry of Defence (MoD) data losses. In July it was revealed that 340 laptops and numerous USB memory sticks had been lost or stolen over a two-year period and a complete server was taken from a secure site in 2008.

The eBay laptop has now been returned and the MoD said that it is investigating how this latest security breach came about.

30 to 34-inch L.C.D.

According to data released by the research firm, Pacific Media Associates, the share of the TV market for 30 to 34-inch L.C.D. TVs jumped to 24 percent in February from 16 percent in January.

That move was at the expense of larger sets. Market share sales for 45 to 49-inch L.C.D. TVs dropped to 14 percent from 18 percent and the 40- to 44-inch L.C.D. and plasma segment moved to 18 percent from 20 percent.

The reason, according to Alfred Poor, Pacific Media Associates’ senior research associate, is obvious: it’s the economy.

Anytime I read the word "obvious", I have an immediate need to try and prove the statement wrong. Now, Mr. Poor (great name for this thesis by the way) could be correct, but I see two other possible explanations for this trend.

First, as TV prices lower, people who weren't previously able to afford an HDTV can now do so. The richer people are still purchasing their expensive TVs, but now additional customers are purchasing lower end models. This quote appears to back me up:

One interesting counterpoint to the shift to smaller and cheaper sets is that the biggest TVs, those 50 inches and above, have not seen a drop in sales.

Second, as many people already have upgraded their primary TV to HD, now they are looking to upgrade the one in the bedroom or in the kids' room. This secondary TV is not going to be watched as often and therefore people choose to pay less for it.

And once I got into my debunking mood, I couldn't let this statement go unchallenged either:

By shifting to smaller-sized models, consumers are saving hundreds of dollars. In February, the average 40 to 45-inch set cost $1,287, according to Mr. Poor. But the average price for a 30 to 34-inch model was almost half that, $685.

At the beginning of this decade, the average selling price for a standard-definition 34-inch picture tube TV was around $400. “We’ve asked consumers to triple the price they pay for a TV. It’s amazing that people have been paying this much.”

Mr. Poor may find it amazing that we pay this much, but I find it amazing that people pay so little for their TVs. Let me explain.

Intel Core i5

The MSI GX740 is a gaming notebook, and is a very powerful machine featuring the Intel Core i5 processor and a high-end ATI graphics chip.

The real selling point of this machine is its price, and this much power for under £1000 makes it a very affordable option, especially when the likes of an entry level Alienware M17x, providing very similar performance, will cost you around £500 more.

As we'll see, however, cuts have had to be made to keep the price low.

Some people like their gaming rigs styled with all the bells, whistles and flashing lights. Personally we don't, and it's fair to say that the GX740 has struck a fine balance between sophisticated and showy.

The lid features a brushed aluminium finish which looks and feels fantastic. It isn't shiny in any way and is therefore easy to keep clean, and also resists fingerprints and scratches well.

The same material is repeated on the palmrest. Again, it's very easy to keep clean but we did notice the area got a little warm after prolonged gaming sessions. It certainly isn't uncomfortable, but worth noting.

Significantly more irritating is the intrusive specification sticker MSI has slapped on the left hand side of the GX740's palmrest.

The company has an irritating habit of doing this, having previously stuck something similar on the excellent MSI Wind U160 netbook. Why you'd want to stare at an ugly silver sticker is beyond us, and it wouldn't be such an issue if it wasn't near impossible to remove without leaving acres of glue behind.

MSI's traditional red trimming adds a splash of colour to proceedings, and offers a nice contrast to the dark brushed aluminium. Above the keyboard part of the speaker system sits behind a metal grill, with a bank of black and red touch-activated hotkeys positioned in the centre.

This looks great, giving an almost retro flavour.

The GX740's 17-inch screen is pretty decent. It doesn't feature a full high definition (HD) resolution, plumping for a 1680 x 1050 instead. This, of course, means that it features a 16:10, rather than a widescreen 16:9, aspect ratio.

While not all games support a widescreen mode, most do these days so it seems a little strange MSI has implemented this technology, and has a lot to do with keeping costs low so as to pass on savings to the consumer.

It shouldn't cause a problem when playing games, as you can alter the settings of most titles to suit your screen, but widescreen movies and TV will appear with the classic black letterbox sandwiching in the picture, which might not suit everyone.

Nevertheless the GX740's panel is bright, detailed and colourful, with contrast especially impressing. Games and films look fantastic, and the shiny Super-TFT screen coating is surprisingly effective at suppressing irritating reflections in bright light.

The keyboard is mounted fairly well into the GX740's chassis, but there remains quite a bit of flex when typing at speed or gaming hard.

Also, despite the large chassis, the board feels a little cramped, and to accommodate the dedicated number pad the Backspace, Enter and Shift keys have been cut small, and are quite easy to miss-hit as a result.

MSI has painted the WASD keys – commonly used gaming keys – red, making them easy to locate during frantic gaming, which is a nice touch.

Set just above the keyboard is the row of touch-activated hotkeys mentioned above. From left to right they control your media (skip back, stop, pause/play and skip forward), activate MSI's Eco mode, Cinema Pro mode, webcam, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a programmable button.

All the keys glow blue when activated, and all are quick to respond. The media controls work great and are compatible with players such as Spotify, but we'd liked to have seen volume control buttons also included.

The GX740's Eco button lets you switch between various power programs to help you get the balance of battery life and processing performance right, and includes a gaming mode, movie mode, office mode and turbo battery mode.

The Cinema Pro hot key is designed to provide greater screen detail and higher sound quality, but the only noticeable difference was louder speaker play back, and we can't envision anyone using the feature much.

Sony Alpha DSLR A700 review

The Alpha A700 is the highly anticipated second DSLR from Sony and the first to be entirely designed by Sony itself. Announced in September 2007 it fills a gap above the original A100 body, targeting serious enthusiasts and semi-pro photographers with higher resolution and more powerful features.

The A700 features a jump in resolution to 12.2 Megapixels with a new CMOS sensor, making it the highest resolution Alpha body, and a step-up from existing rival 10 Megapixel DSLRs. The sensor measures the same size as the existing APS-C chip in the A100, so rumours of a 1.25x crop or larger didn’t emerge for this particular model. On the upside though, this makes the A700 compatible with the full range of Alpha lenses including DT models, and like the A100 before it, all effectively become stabilised thanks to the built-in – and improved – Super SteadyShot.

Like most new DSLRs, Sony’s made the jump in screen size to 3in, but fitted the A700 with a super high resolution model sporting 640x480 resolution which is four times finer than typical 230k screens. And while every digital camera features a TV output, with better models even offering Component options for analogue HD connectivity, the A700 takes it one step further with an HDMI port for full digital HD output.

Sony of course understands you can’t woo higher-end photographers with gadgets alone, so has equipped the A700 with the kind of traditional features you’d expect from a semi-pro DSLR. As such you’ll find a PC Sync port for external lighting, 5fps continuous shooting, an 11-area AF system, interchangeable focusing screens, buttons offering direct access to key settings, both thumb and finger dials, the choice of uncompressed and compressed RAW files, 6400 ISO sensitivity and an optional battery / portrait grip. It’s also tougher with dust and moisture resistance. Perhaps the only thing missing is a secondary status screen on top of the body for shooting information, although to be fair the superb 3in colour monitor goes a long way to make up for it.

While the earlier Alpha A100 was little more than a rebadged Konica Minolta 5D with a higher resolution sensor, the Alpha A700 is a brand new, 100% Sony product. It clearly states the company’s intention to seriously go after the semi-pro market, although as such it’s up against very stiff competition from the likes of Canon’s new EOS 40D, Nikon’s D300 and the Olympus E-3. Since the A700 looks so close to one of the prototype DSLRs previewed by Sony earlier in 2007, it also implies the second prototype, a higher-end product still, could be closer to reality than thought.

Toshiba announces 'no-frills' Satellite C660 laptop

We've got to give Toshiba a bit of credit here -- it's certainly not trying to sell its new Satellite C660 (and accompanying Satellite Pro model) as something it's not. Tossing around words like "adequate" and "no-frills," the company says that the revised Satellite is a "smart and affordable" solution, and it does indeed look like it'll satisfy those looking for only the basics. That includes a 15.6-inch display, your choice of Intel or AMD processors up to a Core i3 or Athlon II, integrated graphics only, up to 8GB of RAM, up to a 640GB hard drive, and a multitouch trackpad, among other standard fare. The only difference with the Pro model, it seems, is Windows 7 Professional for the OS, a black textured casing, and a "non-reflective" screen. No word on exact pricing just yet, but you can look for this one to at least be available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. HTC launched two Android mobile phones in an effort to secure its standing as a top competitor against Apple's iPhone.

Network operators and mobile phone makers are hoping that consumers go for a multimedia experience on the move.

Patrick Choumet, Vodafone's global director of terminals, said that smartphone sales are soaring. He notes that smartphone sales now make up more than 30 percent of the market. His company expects smartphones to make up 70 percent of total mobile phone sales in three years

Mr Choumet adds that Vodafone's data traffic had doubled over the past year. The traffic supported the use of location services like maps, and access to social networks like Twitter and Facebook.

The new HTC phones are based on Android 2.2, the latest version of the Google operating system.

It seems that the more technology advances the more the designers have to push the boat out to satisfy our appetite for weird and wonderful gadgets and gizmos. If we take mobiles as an example, we only have to look at what was available a few years back to see how far we’ve come. Remember the brick?

Now we have mobiles that are much more than a simple phone. Our mobiles double as digital cameras, we can transfer information from phone to phone using wireless, texting has become an art form with a whole new language of its own, and we can hold video conferencing calls, and that is just the beginning.

In recent years we’ve seen the SmartPhone come into being, we can browse the Internet, send emails, check flights, book holidays, and even pay our bills. Mobile phones come in all sorts of sizes and colours with various distinguishing features that separate them from the rest and of course we have our favourites. So what could possibly be next?

Here we have a concept mobile by designer Andy Kurovets and you’ll either love it or hate it. The Bend Mobile has what you would expect a standard phone to have like a screen, a keypad and a camera. This one, however, goes way out there when it comes to design.

There’s something I can’t quite get my head around and it’s just so happens to be the phone’s most distinguishing feature, and that is the curved shape, hence the name Bend Mobile.

Dell’s Inspiron M101z laptop is the latest in compact computing. It offers premium looks, a big display, a full-width keyboard, long battery life and a powerful processor in a laptop no bigger than many netbooks. At under four pounds, it fits easily into a handbag or backpack and can handle everyday computing tasks, plus stream music and play HD videos. The Inspiron M101z laptop is powered by an AMD Athlon II Neo Mobile processor and integrated ATi graphics. It offers an 11.6-inch TrueLife HD glossy WLED display (1366x768), up to 4GB of fast DDR3 memory and up to a 320GB SATA hard drive. The PC is equipped with a built-in 1.3 megapixel Webcam, SRS Premium Sound with two 1.5W speakers, three USB 2.0 connections — one with USB PowerShare, HDMI port, VGA port and 7-in-1 media card reader. Sony Vaio VPCS12V9E/B review

Sony's latest ultra-portable laptop is packed full of features, but are these enough to justify its high cost?

Sony is well known for it stylish laptops aimed at home users and other consumers. The Japanese giant has long had a range of laptops aimed at business users though and the company's latest S-series Vaio, the VPCS12V9E/B, is its latest model. The simple, black appearance is plain yet stylish in an understated way and looks like a less colourful version of the Vaio Y series. The VPCS12V9E/B has a built-in DVD writer yet still manages to weigh just 2kg which is light enough to carry around all day.

Despite being quite light, the VPCS12V9E/B feels very rigid and sturdy. The only exception is the lid which flexes under pressure, but it doesn't feel nearly as cheap as other laptop lids we've seen. The underside didn't become uncomfortably warm either. The battery lasted six hours and 11 minutes in our light usage test, where it scrolls through a series of web pages continuously, which is long enough to last a transatlantic flight. This is impressive, but we've seen cheaper ultra-laptops aimed at consumers with even longer battery life. However, those models can't match the VPCS12V9E/B's processing performance.

The VPCS12V9E/B comes equipped with a powerful Core i5 processor and a whopping 6GB of RAM. It therefore excelled in all our applications benchmarks, scoring 94 overall, so it should be able to handle tough tasks for some time to come. The Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics chip has its own memory rather than sharing main RAM. It can be used to speed up applications designed to take advantage of it, such as Photoshop, but such programs are thin on the ground.

Fast performance in a laptop is of little use if the keyboard and touchpad aren't very comfortable to use. Luckily, we were impressed with the VPCS12V9E/B's large and responsive keyboard. It's very comfortable to type on. The backlit keys illuminate automatically in dark conditions, which typists of all skill levels will appreciate, although you can't manually adjust the brightness as you can on the Apple MacBook Pro laptops. The touchpad is large and accurate, with buttons that give just the right amount of feedback when pressed.

If you're concerned about security, then you'll appreciate the fingerprint reader. This can be used to lock your computer instead of a login password. Sony's included software can create encrypt files and these too can be locked and unlocked with a fingerprint instead of yet another password. There's an option in the BIOS to clear stored fingerprints. While this is a useful option if you injure your finger, it's also a potential security loophole. Fortunately, it can be closed easily enough by password protecting the BIOS.

A 3G modem is built-in, so you won't need to occupy one of the three USB2 ports or the ExpressCard/34 expansion slot with one. The ExpressCard slot is a potentially useful extra, but it's located very closely next to the DVD writer and two of the USB ports so a large ExpressCard could foul the USB ports and the DVD writer, or a chunky USB flash drive could foul the path of the DVD writer or ExpressCard slot. Oddly the DVD writer's eject button is located on the front edge of the laptop rather than on the drive tray as you'd normally expect. There's a connector on the underside for a port replicator, but this costs a rather steep £180.

Asus B series laptops boast Boston-Power's Sonata batteries

With spec parity a given for most notebooks these days, innovations in batteries are one of the few areas that brands can use to differentiate themselves from one another. Case in point: The latest laptops from Asus, which will feature Sonata batteries from Boston-Power.

The new B series portables will join select HP laptops in offering the Sonata batteries, whose claim to fame is their superior ability to retain more of the charging capacity over time than conventional laptop batteries — “triple the lifespan of typical notebook batteries,” according to Asus. So after three years, they should retain 80 percent of their capacity per charge. They’re also the only lithium ion batteries to earn a Nordic Ecolabel accreditation. Putting its money where its mouth is, Asus is offering a three-year warranty on the battery itself.

As for the rest of the B (for “business”) lineup’s specs, the four models will all run Intel Core processors, with the default CPU being the Core i5-520M. The B43J and B53J will also be available with a Core i7-620M processor. While the B53F comes with integrated Intel graphics, the other laptops feature an ATI Mobility Radeon 5470 graphics card; all sport LED-backlit displays. Less exciting are the mere 2GB of RAM included, as well as a smallish 320GB hard drive. Enterprise-friendly features include Intel’s vPro, anti-theft, and trusted platform module technologies.

Swiftpoint Laptop Mouse Challenges the Touchpad

A New Zealand company has released a wireless mouse optimized for laptop use that it says is much more comfortable and 30 to 40 percent faster than a laptop touchpad.

The Swiftpoint mouse ($69.95) was designed with a “pen-like grip, which allowed us to make it very small but also usable without the discomfort of prolonged use that comes with lots of small notebook mice,” said company CEO Grant Odgers.

Its design is the result of five years of R&D on ergonomics and consumer desires, he added. “We did many user testing cycles and built five or six prototypes which then evolved into the product,” Odgers explained.

The Swiftpoint mouse need not be positioned to the left or right of a laptop but can be used directly on the computer’s surface below the keyboard – including right on the touchpad area. Further, it comes with a “parking” accessory that holds it in place below the keyboard so it won’t slide down when the laptop is angled.

Its quick-charging technology will yield one hour of use after just 30 seconds of charging via the computer’s USB port. A one-hour charge session yields two to three weeks of use, said Odgers. Further, the Swiftpoint, which weights about a third of a pound, docks directly with the laptop magnetically for recharging. The computer can be toted around with the docked mouse, which will detach without harm if the docking connection is accidentally disengaged, said Odgers.

The company is promoting Swiftpoint with its own website (www.futuremouse.com) through an online video showing how the device works, and with Google banner ads; it is currently available through the site. It can soon be pre-ordered through amazon.com and other online retailers, and then will be made available in stores, said Odgers.

This time, they have revealed the intricate innards of one of the most advanced Android phones you could lay your hands on now. That's right ladies and gentlemen, we're talking about the powerful lil Xperia X10 Mini - which, for its diminutive size, packs in potent firepower.

Thanks to its size, tearing down the X10 Mini is a tad trickier than the teardown of other "normal" sized phones. To complicate things further, the X10 Mini has a non removable battery ALA the iPhone which makes the procedure a wee harder to execute.

Will nostalgia be enough to enamour an Ericsson fan boy with the Vivaz or will sheer HD power do the job instead?

Nostalgia is a curious thing in that it can cause many strange traits and give a person a slightly skewed view of everything. Growing up using old-school Ericsson phones I feel it is my solemn duty to defend any descendants their relationship with Sony may spawn. When presented with the Vivaz I must admit I didn't warm to it straight away, which put me in an awkward position. Do I go on with it for the sake of my nostalgic memories, or give up on it and risk not being invited to the Sony Ericsson Christmas party?

Firstly let's talk spec.

Display

The Vivaz has taken a step back in size and weight from the Satio, measuring up with a 3.2 inch TFT touchscreen display and weighing in at 97g. The screen really does this phone justice and makes all the menus stand out.

Using the menus can be a little infuriating at times, however. The phone comes with a stylus to be used on the screen but a smartphone can only be judged on how well it can be used with using only one's hands and at times using the on-screen QWERTY keyboard felt like the phone was saying to me, "The fingers you have used to dial are too fat. To obtain a special dialling wand, please mash the keypad with your palm now."

Putting my self-conscious issues aside, I must admit the menus are laid out very well and there is a degree of customisation with them to adjust to one's tastes, so I'm willing to forgive it for implying my fingers need a few sessions on the treadmill.

Apple on Tuesday released a new Mac Mini computer with several new hardware features, including faster processors and an HDMI port.

The new Mac Mini comes in two models: one with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and the other with a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The older systems came with 2.26GHz and 2.53GHz processors.

The $699 standard configuration also comes with a 320GB hard and 2GB of RAM. The high-end $999 model has two 500GB hard drives, 4GB of RAM, and includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server. Both computers can be expanded to 8GB of RAM.

There are two interesting additions to the new Mac Mini: an HDMI port and an SD card slot.

The HDMI port allows you to connect the Mac Mini to an HDTV and see the computer's output on a digital screen. This gives you the option to play videos or other media directly from the computer, an option that many users have been asking for in the Mac Mini.

Consumers clearly want mobility. Laptop shipments are up 43.4% over last year with 20% of them being low-cost netbooks. The notebook segment as a whole made up 13% of the total PC sales in the first three months of 2009.

But it was the netbook numbers that’s most surprising. We’ve been hearing for weeks that netbooks are dead, no one buys netbooks, blah, blah, blah. However this Gartner seems to say differently by finding netbooks sales are up 71% over last year.

Today Nvidia has formally announced the 'GTX 480M GPU' for laptops and it achieves a number of significant milestones for the company. Firstly it brings true DirectX 11 support with tessellation, secondly it sees Fermi architecture's debut on laptops and thirdly it is quite simply the fastest mobile GPU to date.

Raw stats? Thinnest Laptop Apple MacBook Air

One of my co-worker is looking for a “small and thin” laptop and I think her search is over. Apple MacBook Air was announced at Mac World this week. Check out the dimensions first: 12.8" wide, 8.94" deep, and 0.16" to 0.76" thin and weight: 3.0 lbs (1.36 kg).

The entire laptop is only 0.76” thick! That is the base + lcd for less than 2 centimeters! This makes this laptop to be the thinnest laptop in the world today. But the immediate trade off is that there is no CD/DVD drive attached and only one USB port. However, the MacBook Air seems to have a new generation of wireless solutions: 802.11n2 and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR wireless technologies. Remote Disc option allows you to easily access other Mac computers’ DVD drive.

To me, the real eye catching component is the multi-touch trackpad, yeah, just like the iPhones…

Another thing worth to mention about the “thinnest laptop” is the 13.3”” widescreen LED supports resolutions up to 1280 x 800. This means you gonna get crystal clear images and good coloring from it.

The iPad is a tablet computer designed and marketed by Apple, meant for internet browsing, media consumption, gaming, and light content creation. Unlike many older tablets, it uses fingertips for input instead of a stylus. Released in April 2010, it introduced a class of devices between smartphones and laptops.

Like the older iPod Touch and iPhone devices, the larger iPad runs the iPhone OS and uses a multi-touch LCD for most user interactions. It runs iPad-specific applications as well as those written for the iPhone and iPod touch, including e-book readers.

The iPad uses WiFi or Wireless WAN to browse the Internet, load and stream media, and install software.

History and availability

Apple's first tablet computer was the Newton MessagePad 100^[22] introduced in 1993, which led to the creation of the ARM6 processor core with Acorn Computers. Apple also developed a prototype PowerBook Duo-based tablet, the PenLite, but did not sell it to avoid hurting MessagePad sales. Apple released several more Newton-based PDAs, and discontinued the last, the MessagePad 2100, in 1998.

Apple re-entered the mobile-computing market in 2007 with the iPhone. Smaller than the iPad but featuring a camera and mobile phone, it pioneered the multitouch interface of iPhone OS. By late 2009, the iPad's release had been rumored for several months. Mostly referred to as "Apple's tablet", iTablet and iSlate were among speculated names. The iPad was announced on January 27, 2010 by Steve Jobs at an Apple press conference at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

Three days later, at the 52nd Grammy Awards, Stephen Colbert used an iPad in announcing the nominees.

Apple began taking pre-orders for the iPad from U.S. customers on March 12, 2010. The Wi-Fi version of the iPad went on sale in the United States on April 3, 2010, at 9:00 am local time, with hundreds of customers lined up outside stores nationwide. The Wi-Fi + 3G version was be released on April 30. 3G service in the United States is provided by AT&T and sold with two prepaid contract-free data plan options: one for unlimited data and the other for 250 MB per month at half the price. The plans are activated on the iPad itself and can be canceled at any time.

The iPad will also be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK at the end of May 2010.^[6] Apple stated they will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders for iPad on May 10.

Israel recently authorized importation of the iPad, after a prohibition related to possible Wi-Fi interference with other devices.

Screen and input

The touchscreen is a 25 cm (9.7 in) liquid crystal display (1024 × 768 pixels, 132 ppi, XGA) with fingerprint–resistant and scratch-resistant glass. Like the iPhone, the iPad is designed to be controlled by bare fingers, not gloves and styli that prevent electrical conductivity (although there are gloves and styli designed for this use).

The display responds to two other sensors: an ambient light sensor to adjust screen brightness and a 3-axis accelerometer to sense iPad orientation and switch between portrait and landscape modes. Unlike the iPhone and iPod touch, which work in three orientations, the iPad supports screen rotation in all four orientations, meaning that the device has no intrinsic "up" or "down"; only the position of the home button changes. Most iPad applications support both portrait and landscape mode.

The iPad has a switch to lock out this screen rotation function (reportedly to prevent unintended rotation when the user is lying down). There are a total of four physical switches, including a home button below the display that returns the user to the main menu, and three plastic physical switches on the sides: wake/sleep and volume up/down, along with the screen rotation lock.

Connectivity

The iPad can use Wi-Fi network trilateration to provide location information to applications such as Google Maps. The 3G model contains A-GPS while both models have a digital compass.

The back of the Wi-Fi model iPad is made of contoured aluminum with black plastic buttons. The Wi-Fi + 3G model also has a black plastic accent on top of the device which helps with 3g radio sensitivity.

The iPad does not have any ports for wired connectivity.

Audio and output

Dual speakers housed inside the iPad provide mono sound via two small sealed channels in the interior speaker assembly that direct the sound outwards toward the three audio ports carved into the bottom-right of the unit. The microphone is within the device. A volume switch is on the right side of the unit, and a 3.5 mm TRS connector audio-out jack provides stereo sound for headphones on the top-left corner of the device. The iPad supports normal headphones and models with microphones, volume controls, or both. Microphones can be used for voice recording.

The built-in Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR interface supports the HSP, A2DP, and HID profiles, which allow wireless headphones and keyboards to be used with the iPad. However, the iPhone OS does not currently support the OBEX file transfer protocol.

iPad video output over VGA is set to 1024 x 768 using a 720p scan rate.

Power and battery

The iPad uses an internal rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery. The iPad is designed to be charged with a high current (2 amperes) using the included USB 10 W power adapter. While it can be charged by a standard USB port from a computer, these typically provide lower current (500 milliamperes or 1 ampere). As a result, if the iPad is turned on while being charged with a normal USB computer port, it will charge much more slowly, if at all.

Apple claims that the iPad's battery can provide up to 10 hours of video, 140 hours of audio playback, or one month on standby. The battery loses capacity over time and is not designed to be user-replaceable. As in the battery-replacement program for iPod and the original iPhone, Apple will replace an iPad that does not hold an electrical charge with a refurbished iPad for a fee of US$99.

Storage and SIM

The iPad was released with three options for internal storage size: a 16, 32, or 64 GB flash drive. All data are stored on the flash drive and there is no option to expand storage. Apple sells a camera connection kit with an SD card reader, but it can only be used to transfer photos and videos.

The Wi-Fi + 3G model has a micro-SIM slot (not mini-SIM) located on the side of the device. The 3G model may be used with an AT&T data plan that does not require a contract. Apple has heavily advertised the uses of the no-contract plan on their website. Unlike the iPhone, which is usually sold locked to specific carriers, the 3G iPad is sold unlocked and can be used with any compatible GSM carrier.

Hailing from Asus’ Republic Of Gamers series and equipped with Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology and powerful hardware, the Asus G51J gives a different dimension to gaming, in the true sense. It’s a mean machine with a rich feature set, but can it handle the intensive rendering when it comes to 3D gaming? Let’s find out!

Design
The laptop follows a dashing blue-black theme, where the lid is glossy and deep blue with an illuminated ROG emblem and lights at either edge. The interior is all-black, with a hint of brushed satin chrome around the touchpad. Thankfully, there aren’t any loud or annoying colorful blinking lights, something rather typical of gaming laptops. On the contrary, this one is quite sober to look at. Open the lid and you’ll notice a glossy but solid screen frame, good-quality hinges, and a matte rubberized wrist rest with a nice matte touchpad. The touchpad is rimmed with a brush finished metallic frame, which extends to double as mouse buttons. The overall build quality and the ergonomics are top notch, but we weren’t impressed by the chiclet keyboard, because it flexes a little too much.

Gaming laptops are large in size, heavy in weight and they certainly can’t be carried around on a regular basis, and the Asus G51J is no exception. Owing to its overall size, ruggedness, and rich feature set, this laptop weighs almost 3.5 Kg and its maximum thickness is almost 5 cm. So, what goes without saying is that, you’ll have to use it on a desk, unless you want a sore lap. Also, while benchmarking and gaming, we noticed the temperature of the base soaring to 70 degrees Celsius, so you wouldn’t want to play games when on the move. Another good reason for using it on the desk is that, this laptop doubles up as a high-end desktop PC, thanks to the powerful hardware.

Features
In terms of hardware, the biggest asset of this laptop is the processor, while others include RAM, the two hard drives and the discrete graphics. Built around Intel’s performance chipset, an Intel PM55, the machine is powered by an Intel Core i7 720QM processor which is clocked at 1.6 GHz. There is 4 GB DDR3 RAM and two 320 GB hard drives (7200 rpm). So there is not only enough number-crunching power but also ample room for storing games, music, movies and such. The discrete graphics is courtesy an Nvidia Geforce GTX 260M.

Coming to the highlighting feature; the laptop bundles with it the Nvidia 3D Vision glasses and a classy Razor Abyssus optical gaming mouse. So you don’t need to go hunting for these must-haves. Also, you don’t need to worry about compatibility, because the 15.6-inch screen is a 120Hz panel (1366 x 768) which is suited for the 3D vision kit. Want something more to drool over? This machine has a Blu-ray drive and multi-channel sound, so even watching movies is truly a treat. Options for external display are common, HDMI and VGA. The standard connectivity options include gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi N and Bluetooth. Then, there are 4 USB ports, a 2.0 megapixel webcam, a FireWire port, a memory card reader and the laptop is pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). Finally, in addition to the Nvidia 3D Vision kit and the Razer mouse, the laptop bundles with it a sporty rucksack, an OS-recovery disc, drivers, manual and a cleaning cloth.

The processor
Most powerful and high-end in Intel’s new series of Core processors, the Core i7 features Hyper Threading (HT) and Turbo Boost. While the Intel Core i3 and Intel Core i5 series of CPUs are common to entry-level and mid-level machines respectively, the i7 is the workhorse when it comes to performance. The CPU used in this laptop (the Intel Core i7 720QM) is a quad-core variant so you can see eight threads processing simultaneously (thanks, to HT). Also, it has a whopping 6 MB L3 cache, which again helps boost the performance of a CPU.

Nvidia 3D Vision
Remember the blockbuster flick Avatar? Well, now you can enjoy a similar experience in your home, with Nvidia's 3D Vision glasses. These glasses have brought about a new twist to the gaming world. They offer a stereoscopic 3D experience during gaming and even while watching 3D images. But, for the glasses to work, you need a 120 Hz LCD monitor.

While the G51J bundles these glasses, you can even buy them separately to experience the 3D realm on your desktop PC. Since there is wireless technology involved, in the kit you'll find a wireless receiver which connects with the USB port. Also, they wouldn't work with any game you throw at it, there's a handful of games, that are optimized for this technology.

Nokia's all-you-can-eat, unlimited music downloads service has landed in China, offering subscribers access to an extensive catalogue of Windows Digital Rights Management (DRM)-free tracks.

The service will operate in a very similar way to that which is available to UK customers, with all Comes With Music-branded Nokia phones bundled with 12 months access at the point of purchase.

During this time they are entitled to download as many songs as they wish to. Accounts are transferable to new phones, but only if they are part of the Comes with Music range.

The exclusion of DRM, which is employed by certain services in order to prevent songs being copied onto multiple devices, suggests that Nokia and major music labels are less concerned with restricting the use of their products and more interested in getting people signed up to Comes with Music.

Nokia 'Comes With Music' Service in India Soon

Nokia has announced plans to bring its "Comes with Music" service to India before the end of 2010. The service, which is currently only available in the UK and Singapore (for reasons best known to Nokia), will enable users to enjoy unlimited music access.

The move, according to Nokia, will help curb the music piracy problem in the country by providing consumers unrestricted access to music. According to Nokia India's marketing director Vineet Taneja, services like these which remain *almost* free will attract people and buy music legally rather than take the piracy route.

With Nokia Comes with Music, users get access to unlimited music downloads from Nokia's existing "Nokia Music" service for free. This means, the users will have access to over 3.5-million tracks of all genres, Indian and international labels that the Nokia Music Store currently stocks. Many phones priced in the Rs. 6,000-7,000 bracket will come embedded with this service. The user can then download and play the music on his phone. He can also sync it with his PC and play it on multiple platforms without any DRM restriction. Existing phones can be made 'Comes with Music' compatible as well.

Toshiba is making it known that the company ha s no intention of sitting out the tablet PC revolution. You know, if it actually turns out to be a revolution.

Netbooks began to take the world by storm when Asus introduced a consumer oriented low cost mini-laptop in late 2007. It took half a year for HP to introduce the first real competitor for the Eee PC 701, and another few months before the rest of the PC industry really caught up.

Things are moving very differently in the tablet space. Everybody has their eye on the upcoming Apple iPad, but HP, Asus, MSI, Lenovo, and other PC makers have already announced plans to launch their own slates. And now we can add Toshiba to the lineup.

A Toshiba exec tells Fortune Magazine that it will bring out a whole line of slate devices later this year or early next year. No word on what kind of tablets we’re talking about. They could be Windows tablets with x86 processors, or ARM-based tablets running Linux, Google Android, Chrome, or another OS. Or maybe all of the above.

Review: Toshiba Tecra A11 laptop

The Toshiba Tecra A11 is intended as a desktop substitute for business users, and is designed with an emphasis on performance and features rather than portability. Despite this, it is not excessively weighty at 2.5kg, but its short battery life means the system can scarcely be used much while away from mains power.

Available since February, the Tecra A11 models have a 15.6in widescreen display with Intel Core i3 and Core i5 processors, optical drive as standard, plus a whole range of I/O ports and business features such as fingerprint scanner, smartcard reader and Trusted Platform Module security chip.

Our review unit was the Tecra A11-11H, which has a dual-core 2.4GHz Core i5 M520 processor, 2GB of DDR3 memory (expandable to 8GB) and a 250GB Sata hard drive, with a built-in DVD Super Multi drive that can record as well as read DVD and CD media.

Windows 7 Professional is supplied as the operating system, with downgrade rights to Windows XP Professional if required.

Display
We found the Tecra's main appeal is the large 15.6in display with its 1,366x768 resolution that makes for comfortable viewing of spreadsheets and web pages, while its size also means there is plenty of space to rest your palms while using the keyboard. This resolution is a bit low for a screen of this size, but users can obtain resolutions up to 2,048x1,536 on an external display.

In terms of performance, the 2.4GHz Core i5 processor, which looks like four CPUs to the system because of Intel's Hyperthreading technology, seemed to make little difference in normal use. That was until we tried an action such as opening a graphics-heavy PDF, which the Tecra took in its stride, while another PC we viewed it on struggled to display it, especially when scrolling up and down.

The Windows Experience Index in Windows 7 rated the Tecra at just 3.9, but this result is pegged back by the performance of the Intel graphics built into the processor itself, with the processor, memory and disk subsystems all showing high scores of 5.1 and above.

Battery life
Another point worth noting is the relatively poor battery life of this model. Toshiba quotes a life of four hours and 40 minutes from the 55Wh lithium ion battery, but we found that it lasted no longer than one hour and 23 minutes in our tests using the Battery Eater Pro benchmark.

This suggests that, while the Tecra A11 is a good overall workhorse machine, it should be regarded as a portable computer for lugging between sites where there is mains power, rather than to be used much on batteries while travelling.

OTTAWA — Canada's closed-shop telecommunications industry is being thrown open to foreign competition, setting the stage for more wireless players and possibly lower rates for cellphones and other telecom services.

The government signalled in the throne speech Wednesday it is opening key sectors, including the satellite and telecommunications industries, to both venture capital and investment from outside the country.

The move is not entirely a surprise, given that Industry Minister Tony Clement recently overturned a CRTC ruling that disqualified a new entrant into the wireless market, Toronto-based Globalive Wireless, for being too foreign owned.

And nearly two years ago, a government-appointed commission headed by former BCE chief executive Lynton Wilson recommended Ottawa loosen foreign ownership rules in communications, uranium and some other sectors.

Globalive, effectively controlled by an Egyptian company, has been selling its Wind Mobile wireless services since Christmas.

But now the Harper government appears ready to make the Globalive precedent the rule rather than the exception.

"Our government will open Canada's doors to venture capital and to foreign investment in key sectors, including the satellite and telecommunications industries, giving Canadian firms access to the funds and expertise they need," the document states.

The government said it will also make sure "unnecessary regulation" does unduly restrict foreign investment in Canada's uranium mining sector.

The world's biggest uranium company, Cameco Corp. (TSX:CCO) is based in Saskatoon and has partnerships with other foreign companies in the Athabasca region of northern Saskatchewan, one of the world's most prolific uranium mining areas.

But under provincial law the company is required to maintain its headquarters in Saskatchewan, which makes a potential merger or takeover more difficult.

In the past, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said his government might open up its uranium sector to foreign takeovers provided Canada gets rights in the country of a foreign owner and that any investments from foreign parties meet a national security test.

Further details are expected in Thursday's budget, but industry analysts say the policy shift could harbinger great changes in Canada wireless market.

The digital transition next year opens the possibility of the government auctioning off a wide swath of new spectrum, allowing new players to bid and win space to operate new networks, as Globalive did last year.

"I think this is long overdue," said Michael Geist, a professor of e-commerce law at the University of Ottawa.

"The possibility of a Verizon or Deutche Telekom, or (Japan's) NTT Docomo, some of the large global players that have been investing in other markets might see Canada as more open to business."

Globalive chairman Anthony Lacavera also welcomed the move, saying it will give consumers more choices.

"Canada has got one of the least competitive wireless markets in the world demonstrated by the high pricing and low penetration (of mobile phones)," he said.

Lacavera said he isn't sure whether the Globalive precedent - the company is 65 per cent owned by Egyptian telecom giant Orascom -played a role in the federal government move.

Critics of the current system say Canadians pay significantly more for wireless services than Europe, which allows foreign competition.

HP reclaims laptop battery life crown from Lenovo

One week after Lenovo Group Ltd. introduced a ThinkPad with a 12.2-hour runtime, Hewlett-Packard Co. says it's recaptured the record.

HP's new EliteBook 2540p business laptop can run for up to 12.5 hours, edging out Lenovo's ThinkPad X201s by about 20 minutes.

The caveat is that buyers of the ultraportable EliteBook 2540p must opt for a slower, lower-voltage Core i7-640LM processor and a pricier 9-cell Lithium-Ion battery ($39 more than the 6-cell battery) to achieve that runtime, said an HP spokeswoman. Else, the maximum runtime for the EliteBook drops down to about 11.5 hours, she said.

That situation is similar to the ThinkPad X201s. Users must also opt for a 9-cell battery and an Intel Core i7-640LM CPU to hit 12.2 hours.

Similarly, the runtimes for both the Lenovo and HP laptops are only achievable using batteries warranted for one year of usage. Such batteries tend to degrade and lose their maximum capacity quickly after that first year.

As an alternative, Lenovo last week began to offer long-life batteries warranted to hold their runtime for 3 years, or about 1,000 charges.

Those matched HP, which last year introduced its Long-Life batteries, built by Boston Power Inc., that are also guaranteed to hold their charge for 3 years.

The tradeoff is that long-life Lithium-Ion batteries, while more durable, can't offer the same high capacity/runtime out of the box as the largest Lithium-Ion batteries.

Workers at Chinese mobile phone supplier poisoned by cleaning chemical

Nokia says parts for its phones are not made on the Wintek production lines that have used n-hexane as a screen-cleaner.

Workers at a Chinese factory that makes parts for mobile phone companies including Nokia have been in hospital for months after being poisoned by a chemical used in production.

The owner of the plant says it stopped using the screen-cleaner n-hexane in August last year after 47 workers were taken ill. But the lingering effects of the chemical have left several requiring continued medical care.

Taiwanese firm Wintek is known for its touch-screen panels for mobiles and owns several factories in mainland China. It is reported to make the iPhone's touch-screen panels and has been widely touted as a potential supplier of iPad components for Apple.

Nokia said the n-hexane was not used on its production lines but that it had ensured measures were taken to protect workers' safety at the plant in Suzhou, Jiangsu province.

It is not clear why Wintek started using n-hexane to clean screens instead of alcohol, nor when it did so, although the health problems appear to have surfaced in July. The issue gained attention when 2,000 workers from the factory went on strike last month over a pay dispute and cited lingering anger about the chemical incident.

Deng Yulong, a 19-year-old worker, told Chinese Central Television she became sick soon after starting work at the plant. She suffered from weakness and severe headaches and fainted twice in the factory.

Repeated exposure to the chemical at high concentration can cause nerve damage and muscle weakness, with symptoms in severe cases lasting for as long as two years.

A spokesman for Wintek said that "almost all" of the affected workers were back at work but that some remained in hospital. He could not say how many had recovered.

He said that n-hexane was commonly used in the industry, adding that the problems arose because no prior evaluation of the plant was carried out. Because some areas were not ventilated, the concentration of the chemical built up and poisoned the workers.

The spokesman added that the company had paid the workers' medical bills and regular wages, topped up with food and nutrition supplements amounting to more than their usual wage.
